![]() ![]() Still, there’s a lot of first-person shooter fun to be had here. Buyer beware: Much of the dissatisfaction I’ve been reading about when it comes to RAGE is its length, even though it’s priced really well at 99 cents for the regular version and $1.99 for the HD (iPad and retina-capable) version. The big downfall of RAGE is that it’s short – only three levels – and that makes it feel more like a tech demo for id’s iOS capabilities than a full-fledged game. It’s tough to master, but oh so satisfying, and it gives the whole experience a much more physical, exciting feel. The touch aiming is a little infuriating (as your thumb drags over the screen, blocking your view and often accidentally hitting the “pause” button), but the default-style tilt-controlled aiming really takes the game up a notch. EmuVR will let you play the ACTUAL old games on VR consoles in a VR 90s bedroom. On the plus side, id has really nailed iPhone-specific tilt controls. In my opinion 2 is better than 1 because 1 is too difficult/luck based but they’re the closest to time crisis I’ve seen so far. These can be classic shooting games, tailored for an on-rails experience. You are left with the task of targeting and shooting the enemies as they come into view. You get that experience when you amp up the difficulty, but the tradeoff is an experience that can be tough to be good enough to play. On-Rails Shooters and Light-Gun games take over the movement and navigation side of things for you. ![]() One of the most popular arcade shooters was House of the Dead. That’s a shame, because a little more tactical demand would be nice. Light gun shooters used to be all the rage back in the 1990s. It’s unfortunate that there’s not more you can use, because while each gun has its uses, you won’t switch between them much if you do a good job budgeting your ammo and picking headshots, at least on the middle difficulty setting. RAGE only includes three guns to do your fighting with: a high-powered shotgun, mid-range useful AK-47 and default pistol. The player takes part in a post-apocalyptic game show, and your only goal is to aim your gun and kill whatever’s coming at you, while occasionally shooting at bullseyes scattered around the map, or ammo, health and cash pickups. The on-rails iOS shooter won’t be much akin to id’s PC powerhouse when it is released, however – instead, Mutant Bash TV distills that game into one of its key elements. Re-releases would at least help sate the hunger many players have for the genre. The first of hopefully several iOS games set in the universe of id Software’s upcoming PC and console first-person shooter, RAGE, RAGE: Mutant Bash TV is a rail shooter that can make hardcore gamers very hopeful for the future of gaming on the iPhone. This list takes a stroll down memory lane and features the best of the best light gun games, making fans wish they would get some sequels or a re-release. Games reaching their third or fourth decade still feel good to play on a well-calibrated arcade cabinet. Updated on December 19, 2022, by Jason Wojnar: Even though video games are more realistic than ever, it is hard to beat the feeling and immersion of playing a game with a light-gun peripheral. Maybe they will come back in the future but until then, enjoy what is considered some of the best light gun games around. The following classics listed below all make us yearn for the fun arcade days. The genre has since left the limelight, though some could argue that traces of it are in many VR titles. ![]() Some of these games made it into homes along with peripherals. RELATED: Weird Things You Never Knew About Working In An Arcade One of the shining stars of this scene was the light gun game, which allowed players to use a peripheral to actually aim at the screen. Arcades have sadly been on the verge of complete obliteration due to the ever-changing times and evolution of video game hardware since their heyday.
